The "Invisible" Candidate
Hi everyone,
In my work supporting clients with recruitment, I’ve started noticing a fascinating… and slightly unsettling trend: the rise of the "AI-augmented" candidate. While we’ve all seen the "perfect" resumes and pre-screening answers that sound a little too perfect, they often sound a little too similar too.
My mission at HumanizeHR is to make HR more human. But with 1 in 3 job seekers now using AI, especially in competitive industries like tech and finance, it’s getting harder to find the real person behind the prompts.
So, let’s dive deeper into the tech side of the job application!
What AI Tools Candidates Are Using
Beyond basic resume polishers, candidates are now using a sophisticated suite of "stealth" tools:
- Interview Copilots. Tools like Final Round AI or Cluely provide real-time, undetectable desktop overlays that "listen" to your questions and feed candidates STAR-method responses during live Zoom or Google Meet calls.
- Auto-Apply Bots. Services like LazyApply and AI Job Hunter can fire off up to 150–1,500 applications per day, automatically filling out your short-answer pre-screening questions with structured responses.
- Voice and Video Deepfakes. In extreme cases, candidates use AI voice models and video filters that "correct" eye contact to make it look like they are staring at the camera when they are actually reading a script.
How to Spot the AI Use
If you suspect a "Copilot" is in use, look for these behavioral red flags:
- A consistent 3–5 second pause after you finish speaking. Even the fastest AI has a "lag loop" to transcribe, generate, and display a script for the candidate.
- If a candidate’s eyes move rhythmically from left to right, they are likely reading a translucent teleprompter overlay on their screen.
- Watch for "Marketing Rounding" (e.g., "Increased sales by exactly 25%") and high-frequency buzzwords like elevate, foster, delve, groundbreaking, testament, cornerstone, rooted in, robust, comprehensive, seamless, orchestrated.
How to Address it
You don’t have to be accusatory. You can use these tips and short scripts to get back to a human level.
Respectfully point out the obvious
"I noticed a slight lag. Are you using any real-time transcription or AI tools to help with the call today? We ask because we need to assess your spontaneous communication for this role."
Interrupt a polished story
Use a sudden "what if" constraint. AI is great at "what" happened, but poor at a sudden "why" that wasn’t in its original prompt.
"Wait, before you continue, why was this decision made?" or "What led you to conclude this?"
A human can answer instantly because the memory is in their head. A candidate reading a script will stumble because the AI hasn’t "written" that specific detail yet.
"That was a very polished answer! Now, I’d love to hear it in your own words, perhaps with a specific, un-polished example from your actual day-to-day experience where things didn’t go perfectly."
Ask follow-up questions to modify the scenario
For example, if they give a generic AI answer about a project, immediately change the variables.
"That sounds great. Now, what if the client had cut the budget by 50% on day two? How would that specific plan have changed?"
Move away from "Tell me about a time…" questions and move toward short, technical, or situational "this or that" questions. The dependency on AI will become painfully obvious.
Add a disclaimer to your interview invites and job ads
"We value authentic communication. While we embrace AI literacy in the workplace, our interview process is designed to assess your spontaneous, unassisted problem-solving and communication skills. The use of real-time AI to script or provide answers is not permitted. If you require AI-based assistive technology as a disability accommodation, please contact [Email] in advance."
The Compliance Side
Remember, transparency goes both ways. As of January 1, 2026, under the Working for Workers Four Act (Bill 149), if you are using AI to screen or select applicants, you must include a disclosure statement in your public job posting if your company has 25 or more employees.
"We use AI-powered tools to help our team sort applications and identify top qualifications based on job-related criteria. While these tools assist our efficiency, all final hiring decisions are made by our human recruitment team. We are committed to a fair, equitable, and human-led hiring process."
Let’s make HR more human and hire real and highly qualified humans for our jobs!
