Data with a Heart (and a touch of Spring)
Hi everyone,
The sun is finally making a regular appearance! There is something about the change of season that shifts the energy in the workplace. As the snow melts (at last!), it’s the perfect time for us as HR pros to leverage that "spring renewal" energy.
I’ve been thinking about how we can channel this shift into our HR initiatives. Why not take those 1-on-1s outside for a walking meeting? A change of scenery sparks the creative thinking that’s often hard to find in a boardroom.
Spring Initiative Ideas
To bring the team together — whether they are in the office or remote — let’s leverage the season with some low-cost, high-will outdoor challenges:
- The Virtual Walking Challenge is inclusive and simple. Use a team app to track steps or movement minutes. For remote teams, this is a great way to "walk together" across different cities.
- Desk-Side Gardening is another great way to engage your remote and in-person employees. Send out a small succulent or "grow your own herb" kit. Share photos of our "work-from-home gardens" on internal channels.
- Other outdoor challenges — encourage teams to take a meeting from a park or complete a "nature scavenger hunt" during their lunch break.
The goal is connection and fun. These small shifts in environment remind us that we are humans first and employees second.
Cutting Through the Metrics Noise
Earlier this month, we had a fantastic HR Connect roundtable focused on HR metrics. We all know that "data-driven" can feel like a corporate buzzword, but our discussion hit on why it actually matters: trust.
When it comes to employee surveys, the consensus was clear: to avoid employee cynicism, we have to act.
- Communicate the "why" before and after the survey.
- Discuss the survey content (questions) with management first so everyone is ready to act on it.
- People have long memories; be transparent about what you can realistically change.
Metrics that Move the Needle
We also spoke about the metrics that help us make better decisions:
- Identifying where the gaps are before they become crises helps with succession planning.
- Creating an onboarding experience that addresses real-time feedback.
- Pinpointing bottlenecks in the recruitment process by measuring time to hire and time in each stage of the hiring process.
- Using DEI metrics as a way to see where bias might be creeping into our sourcing.
- Turnover is a lagging indicator; it tells you when someone has already left. Sentiment analysis, such as stay interviews, helps you catch the "quiet before the quit."
What else should we track?
To add to our list, I think two other metrics are vital for building a high-trust culture:
- Internal Mobility Rate. A high rate is a huge signal to the market that you value development over replacement.
- eNPS (Employee Net Promoter Score). The ultimate "pulse check" on loyalty. By asking one simple question — "On a scale of 0-10, how likely are you to recommend this company as a place to work?" — you get a clear, high-level view of your internal brand health. It’s a powerful way to see if your employees are true advocates for the culture you’re building.
At its core, HR metrics and seasonal initiatives are just two ways of doing the same thing: listening to our people and acting on what we hear. So, let’s be creative in facilitating the listening!
